Brandon Marsh has become reliable

PHILADELPHIA— Reliable.

Since joining the Philadelphia Phillies, Brandon Marsh has proven to be a dependable ballplayer.

The 27-year-old outfielder will have finished his fourth season in a Phillies uniform by the time the last pitch is thrown in 2025. Marsh has continually been a slightly above-average player both offensively and defensively since being traded to the club in 2022.

At the beginning of the 2025 season, Marsh hit himself into the biggest slump of his career. His struggles at the plate were uncommon for what the Phillies had grown accustomed to in his tenure. Something was wrong, and both Marsh and the Phillies hoped to find an answer.

By April 16, Marsh was hitting .095 for the season, with just four hits in his first 42 at-bats. The Phillies soon placed their outfielder on the Injured List with a mild right hamstring strain, giving him a chance to heal and collect himself. Hopefully, this was a step towards getting a key contributor back to his true capabilities.

Marsh had the opportunity to head to Triple-A Leigh Valley for a rehab assignment before his return to Philadelphia. Once ready, he rejoined the Phillies for a home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite the poor start on his ledger, Marsh had a chance to return to his teammates with a clean slate.

Once back in Phillies' pinstripes, the outfielder regained form. Since his return on May 3, he has hit .304 with 35 extra-base hits and an OPS of .840 across 110 games. That was the caliber of player the Phillies were expecting.

The monster Marsh

While not considered one of the premier players in the game, Marsh has been able to keep himself in good company.

Heading into Tuesday's series against the Miami Marlins, the Phillies' outfielder is currently 23rd in Fangraphs' WAR for all outfielders (minimum 400 PA). He is No. 23 in OPS (on-base + slugging percentage). Since joining the Phillies in 2022, he has hit for a .270 batting average and .786 OPS. His OPS+ rating, which puts an average player at a 100 rating, is 115 as a Phillie. Combined with his strong defense and outfield versatility, Marsh has proven to be an above-average player.

Combining his on-field success with his positive attitude and energizing personality, Marsh remains an asset to the Phillies.

When the Phillies take the field for game one of the 2025 playoffs, this will be his fourth postseason appearance as a member of the Phillies. He already has the fourteenth-most games played by a position player in franchise history and the fifth-most by an outfielder.

With this being his fourth season on the team, Marsh is under contract with the Phillies through the end of the 2027 season. He is on the lower end of contracts in today's game, likely to earn around $ 4-5 million in 2026. By the time he reaches free agency in 2028, he will already have put together six seasons in a Phillies uniform.

Since Marsh is under team control for the next couple of seasons, he maintains his status as a building block for the next few iterations of the Phillies. He joins Nick Castellanos as the only other Phillies outfielder with a major league salary slated for next season. Other options internally include Weston Wilson and Johan Rojas. Harrison Bader, who has electrified Philly since his debut, has a mutual option with the team. He will likely opt out of that deal to pursue a long-term contract this Winter.

Moving forward, Marsh can be a strong contributor for the Phillies. He has proven to be a solid player that Rob Thomson can trust. He is under contract for two more seasons at a team-friendly rate, and his efforts as a teammate go beyond the camera on any given night.

The Phillies are just weeks away from the postseason. They will try to overcome all obstacles en route to the club's third championship. When number 16 takes the field, you will know what to expect, this year and beyond.
