BREAKING: The Eagles have acquired WR John Metchie III from the Houston Texans in a surprising trade

Posted

With the dog days of training camp soon coming to an end, the Philadelphia Eagles have made a surprising move to acquire WR John Metchie III from the Houston Texans. The Eagles are trading a 5th-round pick and TE Harrison Bryant for John Metchie III and a 6th-round pick. The former Alabama product already has ties to the Philadelphia Eagles' WR room as he was once a teammate of DeVonta Smith.

Metchie will be joining a loaded WR room in Philadelphia with the top two spots already occupied by A.J. Brown and former Alabama teammate, DeVonta Smith. Metchie could slot in right behind Jahan Dotson, who has expressed a new level of comfort within the Eagles' offense this offseason. Dotson is in the final year of his rookie contract and will be looking for a big pay-day in the 2026 offseason.

Metchie will also be free agent after this season but he could return for much less than Dotson due to the lack of production throughout his rookie contract. He unfortunately had to sit out his rookie season due to him being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and has been finding his footing in the NFL little by little. Metchie was a second round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft but found himself on the outskirts of the Texans roster due to their talented wide receiver group that consists of Nico Collins, Tank Dell and rookie Jayden Higgins.

For the Eagles, this could be a move that speaks to their lack of confidence on the depth behind Johnny Wilson. Ainias Smith has had a good preseason but could now be looking at joining the team's practice squad or being poached by another club. The bigger question will revolve around the talented UDFA WR Darius Cooper who has made noise during his time with the Eagles so far. Cooper has turned heads during Training Camp and in their first preseason game against the Bengals. He tallied 6 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals but then was non-factor against the Browns on Saturday.

This is the second trade that the Eagles have made with the Texans this offseason. The first one involved Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and offensive lineman Kenyon Green. With this move, it looks like the Eagles have reversed the swap of picks from the CJGJ trade.

All in all, this is a good move by the defending Super Bowl Champions. The Eagles experience a rough patch of injuries to their offense during the early stages of last season. With A.J. Brown still nursing a hamstring injury, Philly may feel much more confident heading into the season with some much needed depth.

John Metchie III will look to hit the reset button on his career with a team that has more than just Super Bowl aspirations. The defending champions are adding talented depth all across the board in hopes of taking a shot at another Lombardi Trophy. While the jury will be out on the optics of this trade until next offseason, the Eagles offense has definitely taken a big step in the right direction for the 2025 season.
