InterAct Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Seng’s Hair Salon, written by Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay and directed by Chongren Fan. This production transforms a local shop into a battleground for medical ethics and political voice. Seng’s Hair Salon proves that even in the face of a mysterious crisis, the bonds of family remain the ultimate lifeline.
Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay is a nationally recognized Lao American poet, essayist and playwright whose work amplifies refugee voices through poetry, theater and experimental cultural production. Her work has been featured at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, Theater Mu, Theater Unbound and Mixed Blood Theatre.
Vongsay is best known for her award-winning play Kung Fu Zombies Vs Cannibals. The playwright is also currently working on the nation's first Laotian-centered musical, In The Camps: A Refugee Musical along with the plays The Little Mekong Murder Mystery Or The Dead Cops In Little Mekong Play, Buried By The Garden, and A Lao Pandemic Play.
The production of Seng’s Hair Salon continues InterAct's long-standing commitment to socially engaged theatre that reflects the complexity of contemporary American life in Philadelphia. This powerful play explores family survival, cultural identity and the fight for representation in a shifting American landscape.
Seng’s Hair Salon, commissioned as part of InterAct's ongoing project The Philly Cycle, was developed in partnership with Laos in the House, VietLead and the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia.
The Philly Cycle is a major commissioning initiative by InterAct Theatre Company, funded by the William Penn Foundation, designed to bring stories of underrepresented Philadelphia communities to the stage.
