Philadelphia officials announced a new rental assistance program for federal employees living in the city who were unable to pay rent during the recent federal government shutdown.

The One Philly Federal Furloughed Renter Relief Program—created by the City of Philadelphia in partnership with the Division of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and PHDC—will provide a one-time $1,000 grant to eligible renters.

Applications are now open and will be accepted through Dec. 12, or until funding runs out.

Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said the program aims to help residents who went without pay for weeks during what became the nation’s longest shutdown.

“We understand that a month without two paychecks can significantly impact a family,” said Parker. “This one-time grant is intended to help those who may have had to borrow money, take out loans, use credit cards, or seek other means to make ends meet."

To qualify for the One Philly Federal Furloughed Renter Relief Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently a Philadelphia resident
  • Must be a renter
  • Must be directly employed by a federal government agency (contractors are not eligible)
  • Must have been furloughed or working without pay during the recent government shutdown
  • Must earn 100 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI) or less annually

Required documents include federal employee identification, proof of residency (such as a lease or utility bill), official furlough documentation, and banking information for payment.
