The city of Philadelphia has been blessed in recent seasons with star athletes dominating their respective sports.
Despite each major sports franchise having top-of-the-line talent, there is no greater athlete in the city today than Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cristopher Sanchez.
Over the past several seasons, Sanchez has developed himself from a bubble player trying to stay in the major leagues to the best pitcher in the entire sport. Making history, Sanchez tossed 50 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in a streak that spanned from April to June, setting the all-time Major League Baseball record for a left-handed pitcher.
He is the front-runner for the National League Cy Young Award and a potential Most Valuable Player candidate as well. Sanchez is undoubtedly the best pitcher in all of Major League Baseball at the time of this writing.
As mentioned, there is currently a lot of talent in Philadelphia sports these days.
Starting with the Philadelphia Eagles, you can argue that players such as Quinyon Mitchell, Lane Johnson and Jalen Hurts are among the best at their respective positions. You can also include Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter into that mix as well.
Across the street at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, you have the 76ers and Flyers.
While the Flyers proved to be a promising bunch, they were more of a team rather than riding the success of an individual. Dan Vladar and Porter Martone showcased an ability to be great, but they are not yet among the best in all of the NHL.
Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid are certainly two of the best players in the NBA.
At one point in time, Embiid was in the running for best player in the league, winning the 2023 Most Valueable Player Award. These days, his prime is behind him, even though he can still get a bucket when called upon.
Despite the copious amount of stellar athletes in the city at the moment, none are dominating their sport quite like Cristopher Sanchez has.
Following his outing against the Toronto Blue Jays, Sanchez is now 8-2 on the season with a 1.54 earned run average.
Sanchez leads Major League Baseball in innings pitched (93.1) and fWar (3.8). He is second in strikeouts (113) and ERA (1.54) to Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers (116 and 1.50).
When you consider the fact that the veteran left-hander now holds the greatest scoreless inning streak for a southpaw in Major League Baseball history, an organization that is 150 years old, you can start to understand just how great his performance has been.
Dating back to 2025, when Sanchez finished runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award, there has not been a better pitcher.
During that span, he leads MLB in fWar (10.2), innings pitched (295.1) and strikeouts (325).
Sanchez is not a one-hit wonder and has been consistently performing at a level above his peers.
The only knock against Cristopher for this honor is that he plays once every five games for his team. Sanchez will pitch in roughly 20% of the Phillies' total games in a given season.
However, when he takes the mound, you are almost certainly going to see greatness on display. That is why I believe Cristopher Sanchez is the best athlete in Philadelphia sports today.
