The Eagles were dealt a cruel blow on the opening play of last night's season-opener. Special teams ace and occasional fullback, Ben Van Sumeren, went down with an injury and exited the game before it had a chance to get going.

It was revealed on Friday evening that the 25 year old has torn his Patella tendon and will miss the entire NFL season.
This is a really tough injury for BVS, who has done exceptionally well to carve out a role on this roster in multiple aspects of the game. The Eagles are losing a solid special teams performer who can contribute on both offense and defense when asked.
The Birds have signed Za'Darius Smith today, so that move will offset the loss of BVS in terms of roster numbers, but whether or not they decide to call up another name from the practice squad or seek another special teams ace from elswhere remains to be seen.
Hopefully we see Ben Van Sumeren back on the field next season and he makes a quick and full recovery.
