BREAKING: Eagles sign DT Jalen Carter to 4 year, $152 million extension

Philadelphia didn't just reward its star defensive tackle. They're investing in his youth, elite talent, and a rising salary cap before the market climbs even higher.

The Philadelphia Eagles have locked up their interior defensive disruptor on a four-year, $152 million extension with $106 million guaranteed.

Jalen Carter is really young to be signing an extension of this magnitude. His young age is what most media and fans overlook.

Jalen is 25. That is a full half-decade younger than when Chris Jones signed his monster deal. He is also three years younger than Jeffery Simmons, who just set the market. Age matters. Trajectory matters.

And the market never waits for anyone.

That is why the Eagles moved sooner rather than later. Signing a long-term deal for a player who will be the face of your defense for a decade is essential.

The Cap Impact

The salary cap has been climbing roughly 8–9 percent per year. The defensive tackle market hasn’t followed suit. It’s lapped it. If that trajectory continues, the Eagles have signed what they believe to be a generational player for them on what will eventually look like a bargain, assuming he keeps his end of the bargain.

Most ‘capologists’ project the salary cap to climb over $380 million over the next few years.

Jalen Carter's sticker price declines, as does his percentage of the cap, as the cap increases. The Eagles love being proactive and signing their core players to this type of deal. It is good business, and Howie Roseman does this better than any GM in the NFL.

The Deal

The deal is reportedly valued at $152 million with $106 million guaranteed. The market will move higher for his level of talent, with the cap consistently rising, so this will look like a bargain if he continues to evolve into the player the Eagles believe he will be.

Carter is likely receiving a generous signing bonus that will be spread over many years and a couple of void years. The minimum base salaries will surely be low the first couple of seasons, which will keep the current roster together and allow for early additions to the team’s current construction. This structure also protects Jalen Carter.

Disruptor

Players that affect the game the way Carter does are not found in the draft every year. He is special, rare, and as I mentioned earlier, he has the potential to be generational. If you are going to risk a high-dollar investment on a player, this is the type you do it for.

Jalen Carter has played for three seasons; he is an All-Pro, a Super Bowl winner, a two-time Pro Bowler with 13.5 sacks, 108 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, and 41 total pressures.

This is talent that has not reached its ceiling, can not be replaced, and extends Championship windows.

Conclusion

Great teams do not allow one of the most dominant defensive forces in the NFL to walk out of the building.

The Eagles don’t draft players in the first round hoping for one contract. Howie, Lurie, and the Eagles brass draft them expecting multiple extensions.

Philadelphia has never hesitated to invest in elite talent that can wreck an offense, and few defenders create more chaos than Jalen Carter.

This is Carter’s first, and they hope it won’t be his last!
