The Eagles will have to pay DT Jalen Carter a fortune, and they aren't mad about it

Posted

Jalen Carter will be really young when he signs on the dotted line and cashes in on his first extension. That’s the part that most media and fans overlook. The youth factor!

The Eagles' defensive tackle will be 25 when his extension hits with the fifth-year option included. That will be a full half-decade younger than when Chris Jones signed his monster deal. Age matters. Trajectory matters. And the market never waits for anyone. That is why the Eagles will move sooner, rather than later.

The Cap

The salary cap has been climbing roughly 8–9 percent per year. That’s the overall positional baseline; the defensive tackle market hasn’t followed suit. It’s lapped it.

Over the last decade, top-of-market DT deals have grown at a substantial rate, and post-COVID, that growth has accelerated. It’s not just due to the cap's inflation. It’s positional value. Interior pass rush is at a premium now. Maybe more important and expensive than the edge.

Comp Deals

If you take Chris Jones’ number and apply standard cap growth, you’re looking at roughly $37–38 million in 2026. Adjusting it for how defensive tackle contracts have actually behaved, and you’re flirting with $40 million. And we haven’t even factored in how much more valuable his youth is in this scenario.

Step One

The Eagles will almost certainly exercise his fifth-year option. That number should be in the mid-20 million range. Then, Howie Roseman and the Eagles likely pounce to add the extension. There is little benefit to waiting. If there’s a window to lock in a foundational piece at a discount to market value, Howie usually takes it to keep his core together. He emphasized the importance of his core after the team's wild-card loss.

The Deal

The deal could be a three-year extension valued at $115–$135 million. Which, on paper, appears to be about $40 million a year, but once the contract numbers are finalized, they will look very different. The market will move higher for his level of talent, with the cap consistently rising.

A Howie deal could also include upfront guarantees, perhaps $80 million. The sizable signing bonus will be spread over many years, including void years to smooth out cap hits and lessen the impact. It will likely include option bonuses built in to provide additional cap flexibility throughout the life of the contract. The minimum base salaries in the first couple of seasons will keep the current roster together and allow for early additions to the team's current construction. It also protects Jalen Carter for a longer period.

Cap Projections

Over the next five years, some analysts estimate the cap could climb to more than $380 million if it continues its current trajectory. This will keep his contract percentage relative to the cap at a reasonable level. The sticker price declines as the cap increases. That is what the Eagles hope for when they do these deals with core players. They view it as proactive rather than reckless. But they only do these types of deals with core players; that is the key. Players they view as getting another contract.

The Player

The type of interior disruption Jalen Carter brings is not found every year in the draft. It is rare, almost generational. And that type of production doesn’t come cheap when it is time to re-up the contract. There is a reason players like Micah Parsons insinuated that they would come to Philadelphia just to play alongside him. Micah seemed to make it clear he did not want to come if Carter was the player traded away to acquire him. Every great player in this league knows how valuable he is to a defense and to the careers of everyone around him.

The Risk and the Reward

If you are going to risk a high-dollar investment on a player, this is the type you do it for. And the Eagles know exactly the type of player he is, and the one he has the ability to grow into. Which is why, when he signs a deal, and the yearly averages start with a 4, it will shock some fans and members of the media, but it is also what the Eagles wanted when they selected him in the 2023 Draft. To be paying one of the most dominant defensive forces in the NFL, and a player who receives multiple extensions. They are happy about the success and know they can’t let him leave the city.

As always, thank you for reading!
