Eagles vs Lions: Game preview, how to watch & predictions

Posted

The Eagles return home riding the momentum of a gritty 10–7 win at Lambeau Field, where their defense once again looked every bit like a championship unit. Now they face Detroit in what is sure to be another heavyweight NFC showdown that could shape playoff seeding. Philadelphia (7–2) versus Detroit (6–3) are two teams built for a run at a Super Bowl, and where the NFC Championship game is played could be determined Sunday night.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions Preview
When: Sun, Nov. 17 at 8:20 PM EST
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA
How: NBC/Peacock

Offense

The Eagles are winning games, but have not come close to hitting their stride offensively. Jalen Hurts has played efficient, mistake-free football, which has kept them in games. Some would say he and the offense have been too conservative. The team needs to find a way to get the ball to its playmakers and push the ball downfield more evenly at the expense of being less risk-averse.

Injuries have plagued the Detroit secondary, making it vulnerable. This would be a great time for OC Kevin Patullo to get wide receiver AJ Brown more involved. He is ready for a breakout, and showcasing his ability on Sunday Night Football would show the league that he is still capable of taking over a game.

DeVonta Smith has been effective all season and is on pace for a career year. He is a perfect complement to AJ Brown's physicality with his precise route running and finesse. Teams get fooled into believing his game is not predicated on toughness, and that is when he shows up the most and delivers knockout blows. He always makes the most of his targets, and he should be in line for another good game.

Dallas Goedert is also having a career year, already scoring more touchdowns in a season than he ever has. He should dominate the short passing game targets, especially when Detroit brings pressure. He has been Hurts' quick outlet all season, and that will not change.

All signs point to a healthy offensive line, which is great news for Saquon Barkley and the ground game. Detroit’s front seven, led by Aidan Hutchinson, plays fast, but their aggression has worked against them at times and could be an issue facing the Eagles. Barkley thrives against over-pursuit, and his ability to bounce runs could define the game. After grinding through a tough stretch of defenses, this matchup feels tailor-made for Saquon to post a statement performance.

Defense

Vic Fangio’s unit is playing its best football of the season. The Eagles are suffocating opponents and have improved week over week. Quinyon Mitchell has entered the conversation among the league’s elite corners. He is a legitimate top-five player at the position alongside Surtain, Gonzalez, Stingley, and Sauce. His physicality and technique have changed the complexion of this defense. He also follows receivers a lot this season, which is a new wrinkle to the defense and has allowed others to have a more defined role.

The other corner drafted by the Eagles last season, Cooper DeJean, could have his hands full in this game.  Amon-Ra St. Brown lines up in the slot on approximately 50% of his snaps. That should pose one of the largest challenges he has faced, and could define the outcome.

And do not forget about the Lions' other elite receiver, Jameson Williams, who adds another layer of difficulty. Speed! His legs put stress on a defense over the top, and the defensive backs will have to avoid allowing him to get past them.

Jared Goff thrives when he is in sync with rhythm and timing; if you knock that off, mistakes and turnovers usually follow. Fangio will look to confuse Goff by sending pressure and disguising looks designed to ruin his flow from the start.

Lastly, containing RB Jahmyr Gibbs might be the most important task of all. He is one of the more difficult running backs to defend in the NFL. He has the ability to hit a home run at any time once he reaches open space. The linebackers will need to stay disciplined.

Conclusion

This game feels like a preview of what is to come in the postseason. Both of these teams are tough and disciplined. The Eagles will have defeated every likely NFC playoff opponent they’ve faced this year, securing the tiebreakers if they can pull out a win. The opportunity is there to make a statement and move past the circus that has surrounded the team in the first half of the year. If they win the time of possession battle with a strong offensive line performance and the defense performs as it has all season, they will win the game.

Prediction: Eagles 23, Lions 20
Player of the Game: Saquon Barkley. Powered by patience, vision, and another perfectly timed big run to seal it.
