Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles had their journey to another Vince Lombardi Trophy cut short in the wild card round with a 23-19 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. It was another game where the Eagles failed to register a touchdown in the fourth quarter as the visitors bounced back from defeat twice to give the Birds a devastating home defeat.
Despite his Super Bowl MVP award, Jalen Hurts has never lacked critics whenever his passing range is being discussed. And for the 10th time this season, he fell short of the 200-passing-yard mark and missed another opportunity to silence his critics.. Against San Francisco 49ers, Hurts completed just 57% percent of his passes for 168 yards, with none of his passes traveling up to 15 yards.
Former Eagles running back and two-time Super Bowl winner, LeSean McCoy, quickly compared Hurts’ performance with that of his counterpart, San Francisco’s Brock Purdy, who registered 262 yards and two touchdowns in the same game.
Despite arguing in support of Hurts before the game, McCoy switched his stance after a convincing performance from Purdy, now placing him above Hurts in his quarterback rankings.
“I think Brock Purdy might be more consistent than Jalen Hurts,” McCoy said.
Comparing Hurts’ output with the more impressive numbers of Lamar Jackson, McCoy saw the presence of Saquon Barkley as no adequate reason for Hurts’ subpar performances.
“Why our quarterback can’t do that?”. “Solid offensive line, great running back, really great wide receivers, we should have no flaws. So if you ask me who plays the quarterback position better? Brock Purdy.”
Long before the Eagles journeyed halfway through the season, the possibilities of their championship defense were already in doubt and the inconsistencies in their offensive setup made headlines repeatedly. Foreseeing such an end to their season was not mind-ending.
From McCoy’s lens, he believes Hurts is to blame for most of the Eagles’ woes, as he offers very limited abilities as a quarterback, hence the team’s need to work within his limits, as he further expanded on during the most recent episode of the Speak Easy Talk Show, featuring himself, and fellow former Eagle, Emmanuel Acho.
There is bound to be a big offseason ahead for the Eagles, and this kind of defeat is not one that will do any of the players under the microscope any favors.
