Eagles Practice Squad: Key players retained after clearing waivers

The Eagles began assembling their 2026 practice squad by bringing back Carson Steele, Dameon Pierce and several developmental prospects.

NFL rosters were trimmed down to 53 players on Sunday but teams across the league had a chance to make some tweaks to their initial depth chart with the waiver period ending at 1 p.m.

The Philadelphia Eagles, typically active during the month of August, had the 23rd spot in the waiver wire order to put in claims for players but opted not to do so. Instead, they saw four of their former players get scooped up off the waiver wire.

Handful of former Eagles land elsewhere

Kapena Gushiken (DB) was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts, Myles Hinton (T) was claimed by the Cincinnati Bengals, Cameron Latu (TE) was scooped up by New England while Cameron Williams (T) was picked up by the Atlanta Falcons.

The four players claimed from the Eagles were the most of any team.

Tight end Stone Smartt was added to New Orleans’ practice squad.

The Practice Squad

Here are some of the notable confirmed players that will be from the practice roster:

Joshua Weru,  OLB

Along with Uar Bernard, Weru was a player who surprisngly was one fans and beat writers alike were surprised the team elected to go through waivers running the risk that he would be claimed by another team after flashing in the preseason games.

Howie Roseman once again showed that he has perhaps the best pulse on what the league is doing as a whole, and able to keep Weru as a very intriguing developmental player.

Carson Steele, RB

The running back turned heads against the New England Patriots and with Latu being claimed by the Patriots, it potentially opens the door for Steele to find his way to be elevated from the practice squad with the new offense incorporated by Sean Mannion.

Dameon Pierce, RB

The 26-year-old running back returns to the Eagles on the practice squad, first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.  Pierce did not see a ton of time on the field during the summer, dealing with a hamstring injury that cost him valuable time to work with the offense. The former Kansas City Chief and Houston Texan signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia back in March and will serve as the fourth running back within the organization with the Eagles using the practice squad as an extension of the roster.

Pierce, a fourth-round selection in 2022 by Houston, has rushed for 1,684 career yards and eight touchdowns.

Gabe Hall, DT

Hall joined the Eagles as an undrafted rookie out of Baylor in 2024. Primarily a practice squad during his first two seasons with the team, the 6-foot-6, 295-pound defensive tackle finds himself back on the practice squad to provide depth at the position. Hall made the initial 53-man roster last season, appearing in two regular-season games, including the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys

Uar Bernard, iDL

A lot was made about the Eagles not keeping Bernard or Weru, but the risk paid off for the Eagles as both players cleared waivers.

The Eagles could place the Nigerian native in the International Player Pathway program if they choose, which allows them to create an extra practice squad spot to allow Bernard to continue to develop under DL coach Clint Hurtt.

Kiran Amegadjie, OT

The Eagles added the former Chicago Bear to the practice squad. A third-round pick in 2024 out of Yale, Amegadjie made the roster last year for Chicago and played in six games. He was in the mix for the starting left tackle job this season before falling short.

He is a big body that will be added to the plethora of backup offensive linemen that first-year O-Line coach Chris Kuper can work with.

Keyshawn James-Newby, OLB

James-Newby faced an uphill battle to crack the initial 53-man roster missing most of training camp with an ankle injury. Originally drafted in the seventh round by the Eagles this year, he finds his way back on the practice squad first reported by Andrew DiCecco.

The product out of New Mexico racked up nine sacks in his final season and was the second seventh-round selection the team made, along with safety Cole Wisniewski who was also cut from team ahead of waivers.

Jaydon Blue, RB

The third running back on the practice squad, Blue was a 2025 fifth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys after impressing at Texas, especially as a receiving back with the Longhorns.

During the preseason, Blue rushed for 94 yards on 23 carries, including 75 yards on 15 carries against Arizona. Blue does give the Eagles a different type of running back on the practice squad thanks to his straight-line speed and ability to create big plays with his athleticism.

Blue had a Top 30 visit with the Eagles leading up to the 2025 draft.

Here is a look at the list of 13 players who will be on the team's practice squad.

The Eagles like to keep as many high-upside players on the practice squad, which can hold a maximum of 16 players (17 with an international exemption).  They still have some room to add three more players leading up to the season opener on September 13 against Washington.
