The Philadelphia Eagles have finally figured out their Dallas Goedert conundrum by signing the former second-round pick to a one-year deal. With this deal finally completed, the Eagles will avoid a dead cap hit of over $20 million this season. Instead, it will carry over into future years, depending on how the team structures it.
With Goedert now staying in Philadelphia, this gives the team time to find his proper replacement in either this year's or next year's draft. After overhauling their entire offensive staff and scheme this offseason, the Eagles are hoping to reignite an offense that completely stalled last season.
This deal does not just affect Goedert's future with the Eagles; it may also directly affect AJ Brown's time in Philadelphia. Brown has been the center of trade talks all the way from last season's trade deadline to the offseason.
With the Eagles kicking Goedert's $20 million dead cap hit down the road, they have now put themselves in the driver's seat of moving off of A.J. Brown if the right deal comes along. While there's no such thing as a sure thing, and Brown may actually stay with the team, Goedert's return could be the start of an interesting domino effect.
The former second-round pick will be entering his ninth season with the team and will look to build off a pretty good campaign. Goedert caught a franchise and career high 11 touchdowns last season to go along with 591 receiving yards. In his career with Philadelphia, Goedert has 4,676 receiving yards and 35 touchdowns on 409 receptions. It will be interesting to see the role that he takes on in Sean Mannion's offense.
