Eagles Training Camp: Makai Lemon returns to practice as QB2 battle heats up

Eagles WR Makai Lemon returned as a full participant while Tanner McKee received the first QB2 reps during Monday’s practice.

The final week of training camp before roster cuts are made on Friday took place on a sunny Monday afternoon at the Jefferson Health Training Center in South Philadelphia. The Eagles are preparing for their final preseason game on Friday against the Cincinnati Bengals and they also have their public open practice on Tuesday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Here are the biggest observations and storylines from the training session:

Housekeeping

On Day 15 of training camp, the Eagles saw Makai Lemon and DeVonta Smith listed as full participants which is a great sign for both wideouts, especially the rookie Lemon who has missed the majority of camp dealing with the hamstring injury.

Rookies Eli Stowers (hamstring) and Markel Bell (leg/thumb) popped up on the team’s injury report. Here’s a look at the full report:

Welcome back, rook!

Lemon has been unable to showcase his electric skillset the Eagles' front office liked so much causing them to move up to the 20th pick in the draft to make sure they landed the former USC Trojan.

The rookie was lined up with Smith and Dontayvion Wicks as the starting wide receivers for the Eagles and was a full participant in both 7-on-7s and full-team drills.

Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion praised Lemon for being engaged mentally despite not being able to take the physical reps.

"I think that's the challenge, any player that you're injured, you lose those physical reps, but he's done a really nice job," Mannion told the media prior to practice. "He's been locking in in all of the walkthrough settings. Even when he can't get the rep, he's kind of shadowing his position on the field and staying super engaged."

Lemon was last year's Fred Biletnikoff Award winner which goes to the most outstanding wide receiver in college football.  In 12 games he set career-highs in catches (79), yards (1,156) and touchdowns (11) in his breakout 2025 campaign.

Jalen in the middle

A lot has been made about the amount of passing that will potentially take place in between the hash marks with Mannion's new offense. On Monday, it sounded like Hurts was dialing up some throws over the middle of the field.

A lot has been made about whether or not the quarterback can successfully throw in that area of the field since turning pro. He has shown flashes of having success doing so and is expected to do even more of it this season.

Backup QB battle still going

After Tanner McKee outplayed Andy Dalton by a wide margin Saturday night,  it appeared that perhaps the backup quarterback battle had been close to being settled.

Not so fast.

Mannion said Monday afternoon that the decision could not be officially made until the start of the season.

The first-year offensive coordinator said that the team and plays "still have plenty of time" when it comes to deciding who QB2 is. Mannion mentioned this week of practice, the preseason game against the Bengals and then some practices next week to determine who wins the battle.

McKee went 16-for-22 with 173 yards and two touchdowns as opposed to Dalton who went 3-for-10 for 44 yards completing all three passes to Darius Cooper.

Roster Moves

The Eagles are in the process of trimming down the camp roster day by day and they made two subtractions on Monday.

The team waived running back Ja'Quinden Jackson and released safety J.T. Gray, the team announced.

Jackson had a major injury scare on the opening kickoff of the game on Saturday where he left the field in an ambulance but did have feeling and movement in all extremities, per the Eagles.

The Eagles waived the running back with an injury settlement, per Jeff Kerr of Eagles on SI, which means he will be off the roster and another team will have 24 hours to claim him. If no team claims Jackson, the Eagles will have a short period to reach an injury settlement with him.

Gray signed with the team back in March and was looking to make the team more than likely on the special teams unit after being a three-time All-Pro on that unit in his career, most recently in 2024 with New Orleans. Carving out a career as one of the league's top gunners, Gray has played in over 100 career games.

The team will hold its public practice at Lincoln Financial Field on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
