Eagles vs Rams: Game preview, how to watch & predictions

Posted

The calendar reads September, but the mood around Lincoln Financial Field will feel more like January. Sunday’s matchup between the Eagles and Rams isn’t just another early-season test; it’s a sequel to last winter’s Divisional Round, when Saquon Barkley ran for 78- and 62-yard TDs in the snow, which secured a win for Philadelphia and sent Los Angeles home packing with a 28–22 loss. The Rams have circled this date since the schedule dropped. The Eagles know it. Their fans know it. And there’s a quiet edge to a Week 3 game that already carries postseason energy.

Trenches

Philadelphia enters 2–0, leaning hard on the ground game that’s become its offensive backbone. Saquon Barkley has settled in quickly, and when the Eagles’ offensive line gets downhill, the rhythm follows. Los Angeles owns one of the league’s stingiest early-season pass defenses, but stopping a punishing run attack behind the Eagles' offensive line is a different assignment. If Philly establishes tempo and controls time of possession, the Rams’ vaunted pass rush may never get the chance to dictate.

That trench battle will determine whether Jalen Hurts can find his preferred balance. Hurts hasn’t racked up gaudy passing totals yet, but his legs remain the great equalizer. Keep him clean, and the dual-threat stress multiplies. If you flush him too aggressively, he’ll rip off drive-sustaining scrambles. The Rams have generated steady pressure through two weeks, so keeping Hurts upright is priority one.

Passing Game

On the perimeter, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith present the kind of matchup headaches that force defensive coordinators into uncomfortable choices. Los Angeles is down its starting CB2, a critical absence against this duo. Brown’s physicality and Smith’s route precision test even a full-strength secondary, and if the Rams tilt coverage, Hurts is capable of finding Jahan Dotson down the field. Brown, in particular, looks poised for a statement game.

Defense

Defensively, Philadelphia’s own secondary will be under the microscope. Opposite their top corner, the Eagles still haven’t locked down CB2, and Matthew Stafford is savvy enough to hunt favorable matchups. Stafford has opened the season sharp, with a high completion rate, minimal turnovers, and he now has an expanded arsenal. Puka Nacua’s sure hands and Davante Adams’ veteran savvy give L.A. a legitimate one-two punch that can stretch the field and test communication on the back end. Vic Fangio’s defense has been opportunistic, but discipline will be everything.

Conclusion

This game could swing on which team forces the first mistake. Last season, it was the Eagles who seized momentum , forcing two key turnovers to seal the playoff win. Replicating that formula, a timely takeaway, and a drive-crushing sack would tilt the balance again.

Expect another tight one. The Rams will arrive with revenge on their minds and enough offensive talent to keep the crowd on edge. But Philadelphia’s mix of trench dominance, Barkley’s downhill running, and Hurts’ control of the clock should be enough to prevail at home.

Prediction

Eagles 27, Rams 21.

A.J. Brown delivers the big-play spark, the defense finds one critical turnover, and Philadelphia heads into Week 4 still unbeaten, and with another statement that the road to the NFC crown still runs through South Philly.
