The Battle of Alberta is one of the greatest rivalries in sports let alone hockey and these two teams have a serious disdain for one another. It obviously derives from the fact that these two teams are just two hours apart in the Canadian province, creating the obvious geographical rivalry. But fuel was only added throughout the 80's and very early 90's when the Oilers' powerhouse met the Flames in the playoffs five times. While Edmonton holds the 4-1 advantage, the Flames' upset victory in the 1986 Smythe Division Finals stunned the Oilers and ultimately withheld them from putting together the greatest dynasty in modern NHL history. Edmonton had won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985 before winning two more in succession in 1987 and 1988. Had the Flames not beaten them, the Oilers could have very well won five Cups in a row. This is the first time these two teams are meeting in the playoffs since 1991 — a hockey fan's bucket list item 31 years in the making. Both of these teams had their hands full in the first round, which was a bit of a surprise considering they were both favored to move on pretty quickly. The Oilers had some issues getting past Jonathan Quick, but their stars still got their numbers. Connor McDavid put up 14 points in seven games while Evander Kane scored seven goals and Leon Draisaitl added five of his own. But Edmonton's depth behind the big three, their defense, and the play of goaltender Mike Smith will forever be the major question mark of this team — and likely what keeps them from advancing. Calgary appears to be the much more well-rounded team. While they have an arsenal of attacking talent of their own headlined by Johnny Gaudreau, Jacob Markstrom continues playing at a Vezina Trophy-winning level while the defense helped hold the Stars to two goals or fewer in five of the seven games. This is as good of an offensive battle as you're going to get, but it's going to come down to the blueliners and goaltending. The Flames have the advantage, in my opinion.
