The Philadelphia Flyers bounced back in a big way, taking down the Buffalo Sabres 5–2 on Wednesday night after a disappointing loss to the Penguins on Monday. Returning home for a six-game homestand following an impressive road trip, the Flyers were forced to adjust quickly without Tyson Foerster, who will miss the next few months with an upper-body injury. Wednesday’s contest showed exactly how the team shifted its game to help fill that offensive void.
Buffalo struck first, but the Flyers answered immediately with a flurry of goals—three in just 59 seconds. Travis Konecny, Trevor Zegras, and Bobby Brink all found the back of the net behind Sabres goalie Colten Ellis, giving South Philadelphia a strong first-period showing despite the early deficit.
The opening frame did get chippy, however. Both teams piled up penalties, but the one that stood out was Matvei Michkov’s interference call on Zach Benson. It’s become a bit of a pattern in recent games, and the Flyers will need Michkov to rein things in as the season progresses.
The offense didn’t stop there. Noah Cates and Owen Tippett each scored in the second period, while Buffalo managed to squeeze one more past Sam Ersson between the two Flyers goals. The third period remained relatively calm, and although the Sabres appeared to score again, the goal was overturned after a successful Philadelphia offside challenge.
After the win, Konecny spoke about the team’s mindset.
“We work really hard, you know, practicing and trying to keep our momentum going," Konecny said. "You practice hard, you play hard, so those things kind of translate. We also had some days off too right now.”
It’s clear the Flyers’ work in Voorhees is translating, as their home-ice performance has taken a noticeable step forward compared to last season.
One concern from the night was defenseman Cam York, who exited the game after a hit behind the net.
“[York] got hit behind the net," head coach Rick Tocchet said after the game. "I haven’t talked to the doctors.”
The Flyers will have a few days off before returning to action Sunday when they host the Colorado Avalanche.
