Flyers move into new season after a July of ensuring stability

Posted

The Philadelphia Flyers entered July with one clear objective: secure the players they believe will be at the center of their future plans. By the end of the month, they had done exactly that, signing Trevor Zegras, Dan Vladar, and Jamie Drysdale to long-term contract extensions.

While the team didn't make a blockbuster trade, the organization took significant steps toward building stability by keeping three key contributors in Philadelphia for years to come.

Trevor Zegras Becomes the Face of the Offense

The biggest move came when the Flyers signed Trevor Zegras to a four-year, $36.5 million contract extension carrying a $9.125 million average annual value. The deal makes Zegras the highest-paid player on the roster and reflects the organization's confidence in his potential to shape the future of the team.

After being acquired in a blockbuster trade, Zegras put together one of the best seasons of his career, combining elite playmaking with improved scoring touch. His offensive creativity gives the Flyers a dynamic element they have lacked for years, and at just 25 years old, he is expected to remain a focal point of the team's attack throughout the life of the contract.

The extension also eliminates any uncertainty heading into training camp, allowing both Zegras and the Flyers to focus entirely on building off last season's success.

Dan Vladar Earns the Starting Job

Another major priority was solidifying the crease. The Flyers rewarded Dan Vladar with a five-year extension after he established himself as a dependable presence in net.

Vladar provided consistency throughout the season and proved capable of handling an increased workload when the team needed him most. Rather than allowing questions about his future to linger, Philadelphia committed to him as an important part of its long-term plans.

Goaltending stability is something every contender needs, and the Flyers believe Vladar can provide exactly that as the team continues to push toward becoming a consistent playoff threat.

Jamie Drysdale Locked In on the Blue Line

The Flyers also ensured one of their top young defensemen remains part of the organization's future by signing Jamie Drysdale to a long-term extension.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, Drysdale has shown why the Flyers valued him so highly. His skating ability, puck-moving skills, and offensive instincts make him a key piece of the team's defensive core. While injuries have interrupted portions of his career, the Flyers are betting on his talent and believe his best hockey is still ahead of him.

Pairing Drysdale with the rest of Philadelphia's young defensive group gives the organization a strong foundation as it continues developing into a contender.

Building Around a Young Core

By locking up Trevor Zegras, Dan Vladar, and Jamie Drysdale, general manager Danny Briere eliminated three major contract questions before training camp.. The moves provide cost certainty, establish continuity throughout the lineup, and reinforce the organization's commitment to building through a talented young core.

As the 2026-27 season approaches, the Flyers have made one thing clear: they know who they want leading the way, and they've ensured those players will be wearing orange and black for years to come.
