Flyers legend Bernie Parent passes away age 80

Posted

The City of Philadelphia is in mourning following the heartbreaking passing of Philadelphia Flyers legend Bernie Parent.

Parent will be remembered as one of Philadelphia's most infamous players. After being traded to the Flyers in 1967 ahead of their first-ever season, and spending a brief stint with Toronto, he returned to cement a legacy which will never be rivaled.

A man who not only helped the team win back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1974-1975, but was a two-time Vezina Trophy winner during those iconic seasons. He became the first Flyer to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984 and was named to the Flyers Hall of Fame four years later.

The goaltender retired from the NHL in 1979 following an incredible 13-year career which saw him notch 271 wins, 231 of which came with the Broad Street Bullies. His impact on the City both on and off the Ice will never be forgotten. A player who was larger than life and remained a part of Philadelphia's heartbeat for decades after he was forced to hang up the skates.

Parent defined what it meant to be a Flyer, and inspired countless children to pick up a stick. Our deepest condolences go out to Bernie's family and friends at such a difficult time.

As announced by the Flyers, Bernie's family has requested donations to be made to Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education. Donations can be made at sniderhockey.org.
