Flyers takeaways from a rollercoaster trip to the Sunshine State

Posted

The Flyers had an interesting split in the Sunshine State, getting shut out 3–0 by the Lightning before bouncing back with a strong 4–2 win over the Panthers. The biggest difference between the two games was the Flyers’ offensive approach. Against Tampa, they played too far back and couldn’t establish much pressure. In Sunrise, they pushed the pace, played up more, and it showed on the scoresheet.

Some might point to the different goalies — Sam Ersson in Tampa and Dan Vladar in Florida — but the outcomes weren’t strictly about the men in net.

Vladar has been a bright spot this season, making several big, timely saves the Flyers haven’t consistently seen in years. Still, there are fair questions about whether he’s a long-term starter. With the ongoing goalie uncertainty, the organization might be content with Vladar for now, but it’s clear they’re still searching for their franchise netminder.

Emil Andrae scored two of the Flyers’ goals against Florida, continuing to make his case for staying with the big club. After being shuffled up and down all year, his impact is hard to ignore. Tyson Foerster added the go-ahead goal with 44 seconds left, and captain Sean Couturier sealed the win with an empty-netter. The performance against the defending Cup champions showcased the resilience and growth of the Flyers’ young core.

While the Flyers’ defense hasn’t been “lights out,” it’s noticeably stronger than in recent seasons. Tocchet’s system requires an adjustment since he doesn’t typically play an aggressive style, but the blue line has adapted and taken on a bigger role.

The Flyers are off today as the NHL takes its annual Thanksgiving break. They return to action on Friday in Long Island to take on the Islanders. Normally, the Flyers host a Black Friday game at home, but with the Philadelphia Eagles playing at Lincoln Financial Field, that tradition takes a temporary pause.
