The Philadelphia Flyers fell to the New York Rangers 5-4 in the dreaded shootout. Sam Ersson got the start between the pipes, while Denver Barkey made his NHL debut for Philadelphia.
Late in the first period, despite the Flyers outshooting the Rangers, Artemi Panarin opened the scoring to give New York a 1-0 lead. In the second frame, just over six minutes in, Travis Sanheim found the back of the net to even the contest. The goal also marked Denver Barkey’s first NHL point, as he picked up the primary assist.
The Flyers stayed hot, striking again seconds later when Owen Tippett scored to give Philadelphia its first lead of the game at 2-1. The orange and black extended that lead to 3-1 on a Trevor Zegras power-play goal, looking nearly unstoppable. However, New York reminded Philadelphia that this was their building, as Panarin scored his second of the night to cut into the deficit.
Philadelphia responded late in the second period, restoring its two-goal advantage with a shorthanded tally from Rodrigo Abols, which would stand as the Flyers’ final goal of the game.
The third period belonged entirely to New York. Goals from Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad erased the Flyers’ lead and tied the contest. Philadelphia had its chances in overtime with two power-play opportunities but couldn’t capitalize.
In the shootout, both Trevor Zegras and Travis Konecny converted for the Flyers, but the Rangers matched them to secure the win. Philadelphia still picks up a point and saw plenty of promise from Denver Barkey, but this was a game that, with better management, should have ended as a Flyers victory.
