The closure comes as preservation work begins preparation for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Independence Hall will be closed to visitors now through Jan. 28, 2026, the National Park Service announced on Thursday.

The temporary closure is part of a major preservation effort in preparation for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, allowing preservation teams to complete comprehensive interior work, according to federal officials.

The National Park Service, which manages Independence National Historical Park, says the closure is necessary to protect and restore the historic structure. Visitors during this period will still have opportunities to learn about the Hall and the historic documents debated and signed there through alternate experiences provided by the park.

The closure is part of the Independence Square Improvement Project, which began in March 2025 in alignment with Executive Order 14253. Preservation work has already been completed at Congress Hall and Old City Hall, and now focuses on Independence Hall itself.

Key improvements include construction of accessible ramps, repair and restoration of wood, masonry, plaster, and metal finishes, and the application of historically accurate paint finishes on ceilings, walls, and trim.

Park officials say this final closure will ensure Independence Hall—where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed—continues to "serve as a beacon of American freedom and connect current and future visitors with the inspirational story of the country's founding. "

Updated information and closure alerts will be available on the park’s website and Recreation.gov.
