According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles are signing Jonathan Jones, formerly of the New England Patriots and Washington Commanders, to a one-year deal.
Now 32-years-old, Jones is a proven veteran and a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots. He spent 2025 with the Commanders, his first year not playing in New England. And even at 31, he was still relatively solid. He gave up an average passer-rating of 83.5, putting up 31 solo tackles and recording 5 pass breakups.
While his best days are behind him, the CB2 spot was an issue all season in Philadelphia. That will no longer be the case now that Riq Woolen has signed, but adding insurance depth certainly matters. The wildcard, however, is the potential at slot, given that's where the 5'10 DB has shined during his extensive career.
Especially when you consider that
with Reed Blankenship gone, the Eagles could well be looking to move Cooper DeJean over the top full-time. The team experimented with DeJean moving around in 2025 and it can't be forgotten that he was drafted as a pronounced Safety. Vic Fangio opted to keep things simple during his rookie year following an injury, and his usage has become more versatile ever since.
Jones could also simply just be a backup and there be nothing more to it. But this is Howie Roseman, when is anything ever that simple?
