Authorities believe more than one person opened fire Saturday night at Lincoln University, in a shooting that left one man dead and six other individuals wounded and disrupted the Chester County college’s Homecoming celebrations.
Law enforcement officials also identified the man who died of his injuries and someone who was allegedly carrying a gun at the scene, both of whom hail from Wilmington, Delaware.
The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. Oct. 25 in a parking lot in front of the International Cultural Center, where tables and tents were set up for a gathering that followed an afternoon football game, according to investigators.
Clips shared on social media show a large crowd fleeing the area to escape the gunfire. The FBI has asked anyone with video to upload the content to fbi.gov/lincolnuniversityshootings.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said 25-year-old Jujuan Jeffers was shot in the head and died early Sunday morning.
The six other victims are between the ages of 20 and 25 and are expected to survive, he added. De Barrena-Sarobe said one gunshot victim is a current Lincoln student; another is an alum; and that the connection to the university for the remainder is “not direct.”
Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, 21, was arrested in the aftermath of the shooting and charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm, according to authorities. De Barrena-Sarobe told reporters Sunday that investigators have not determined whether the gun was fired on campus.
Morgan-Thompson is being detained on $25,000 bail, court records show. His legal representation has not yet been listed.
De Barrena-Sarobe said investigators do not believe the shooting was a targeted mass casualty attack; rather, they suspect unplanned gunfire broke out during the festivities. Officials have not commented on what may have sparked the violence.
Lincoln, a historically Black college or university (HBCU) located 45 miles from Philadelphia, canceled classes for its 1,650 students Monday and is offering counseling and support services.
