Jesus Luzardo drops 1-0 pitchers' duel to Cam Schlittler on Friday night

Despite a brilliant performance by Luzardo, the Phillies drop another game.

Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo and Yankees starter Cam Schlittler were locked in a seven-inning pitcher’s duel on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Neither Philadelphia nor New York was able to generate hits in the ballgame, but it was the Yankees who got the only one that mattered the most: a solo home run by Paul Goldschmidt to lead off the fourth inning.

It was the only run allowed in a disappointing 1-0 home loss in Philly.

Schlittler edges out Luzardo on Friday night

Both starters turned in high-quality outings in front of a sold-out 43,000+ person crowd at CBP. Luzardo kept New York’s offense in check through seven frames, allowing three hits and one earned run over seven innings with 9 strikeouts. The 28-year-old pitcher made one mistake pitch in the contest, one that "wasn't a terrible of a pitch, either,” according to Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly. Still, that lone run did all of the scoreboard damage New York needed to celebrate a win.

Schlittler was even better in the contest, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out 12 batters. He fell one punchout shy of his career mark of 13 strikeouts, which was set against the Cincinnati Reds earlier this season. The 25-year-old pitcher ran into trouble in the eighth inning, but Brent Headrick was able to navigate a bases-loaded jam to get out of the inning without any damage.

Yankees closer David Bednar secured his 19th save of the season by striking out Harper, surviving a deep fly ball to left field by Marsh (on a fantastic leaping catch by Cody Bellinger), and celebrated after Alec Bohm’s game-ending ground out to third base.

The slim loss drops the Phillies' record to 56-48 on the 2026 season, while the Yankees improve to 58-45 on the campaign.

Another low-scoring affair for the Phillies' offense

It is the second 1-0 shutout loss of the season at the Phillies' home ballpark, joining a one-run loss to the Cleveland Guardians on May 22. Overall, it is the eighth shutout of the season for the Phillies. Overall, Philadelphia has lost 20 games where they’ve posted 1 or fewer runs in 2026.

Philadelphia’s bats have gone ice cold since play resumed from the 2026 All-Star Break on July 16. It’s been feast or famine for Phillies hitters during this current nine-game homestand. In the two games they’ve won, Philadelphia averaged 11.5 hits per game and scored more than six runs in each contest. In the five contests they’ve dropped, the Phillies averaged 5.6 hits per game with a 1.5 runs per game average (which is significantly boosted by a five-run performance in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 22).

Unannounced starter for Philly tomorrow

Philadelphia has not announced a starter for tomorrow night’s matchup against New York. The Yankees are scheduled to throw Ryan Weathers, a right-handed starter who enters with a 3-7 record and a 4.40 ERA in 2026. Keep an eye on Philadelphia Sports Network’s social media channels for updates regarding the Phillies' starting pitcher for tomorrow's ballgame.

The series finale on Sunday night features Cristopher Sanchez taking the ball on primetime television on NBC/Peacock on Sunday night at 7:20 p.m. He will be countered by right-hander Will Warren.
