A police officer fired his gun at a man who allegedly shot another person during an argument that began at a North Philadelphia gas station Monday night, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators said police were called at around 8:30 p.m. for a report of a man with a gun at the Sunoco at Broad Street and Hunting Park Avenue. Several men were arguing at the gas station, according to police.

The group crossed the street, to the area of Broad and Jerome streets, and one of the men, a 29-year-old, pulled out a gun and shot another man, the PPD said in a recap of the incident. The victim, whose age was not released, was struck in his chest and groin and rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

Police saw the shooting, and one of the officers at the scene, a 36-year-old man assigned to the 39th District, opened fire; however, the alleged shooter was not wounded, according to law enforcement.

Authorities said the officer chased the suspect down the 1300 block of W. Jerome Street and took him into custody. Officers found a 9mm handgun under a parked car on the block. The PPD has not publicly identified the suspect, though he is expected to face criminal charges.

Body-worn cameras captured “portions” of the exchange, the police department said in a statement. In line with PPD protocol, the 39th District officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.
