Brandon Marsh shines, but the Phillies lose nine straight

Brandon Marsh homered twice in Thursday's finale against the Chicago Cubs. The Phillies however were not able to find themselves back in the win column.

For the first time in weeks, the Philadelphia Phillies showed fight.

After trailing 6-2 early in the ballgame, the Phillies fought back, scoring three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to tie the game.

They would eventually have to tie it up once again in the ninth thanks to a pinch-hit home run from Adolis Garcia.

Going into extra innings, the Phillies would finally be defeated after a walk-off single from Dansby Swanson. Swanson's RBI would give the Cubs an 8-7 victory.

Chicago's win completed a four-game sweep and a 6-1 record against the Phillies on the season.

Philadelphia has now lost nine straight baseball games. Their record is now 8-17 on the season, and they trail the Braves by 9.5 games in the National League East.

Brandon Marsh

Brandon Marsh was a sparkplug for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Marsh drove in the first three runs of the ballgame for the Phillies, largely keeping them in the ballgame. A solo home run, later followed by a two-run shot, allowed the rest of the lineup to settle in.

The Phillies outfielder went 3/4 on the afternoon with a walk, a strikeout, and two runs scored.

Cristopher Sanchez

The Phillies' ace struggled once again.

Often times, clubs look to their ace to become a stopper when a losing streak breaks out. For the second time around, Sanchez was unable to help lead the Phillies to a win.

The left-hander could not miss bats today in his outing. Chicago had 12 hits off the Cy Young runner-up from just a season ago. Sanchez allowed two home runs in the loss and only accumulated four strikeouts.

Sanchez saw his earned run average bloom to 2.94 on the season.

Phillies Outlook

With the loss, the Phillies are now trailing the Atlanta Braves by 9.5 games in the division.

Their chances to repeat as NL East champs for a third straight season have collapsed.

Philly will head to Atlanta with a desperate need to win the series. If they lose at least two games to the Braves, the Phillies will head home with a 10.5 game deficit.
