Match Preview: Philadelphia Union take on New York Red Bulls with a spot in the US Open Cup Semifinal up for grabs

Posted
35 days after the initially scheduled meeting between the Philadelphia Union and the New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup Quarterfinal, the two teams are set to square off at Subaru Park on Wednesday night with hopes of punching their ticket to the competition's Semifinal round against Nashville SC. The Quarterfinal clash on Wednesday night comes just three days before the Philly travels up I-95 to Harrison, NJ, where they'll take on the New York Red Bulls for the third time during the 2025 season. All-Star defender Jakob Glesnes is set to miss the match against the Red Bulls over the weekend due to yellow card accumulation, but Union head coach Bradley Carnell says the team's full focus is on winning the match in front of them. "It's the shortest route to some Silverware, and now we're at two games til the final. We're not looking at the final, we're looking at the very next game and it's unfortunate it got rained out a month ago or whatever it was because I thought we were pretty good then and I think we're in a good spot now in terms of who's available and our competition in the group." - Philadelphia Union Head Coach, Bradley Carnell

Red Bulls Open Cup Journey The Red Bulls entered the US Open Cup in the Fourth Round of the tournament and faced off against USL's Colorado Springs Switchback FC. Second-half goals from Dennis Gjengaar and Sean Nealis and a first-half brace by Mohammed Sofia pushed the Red Bulls to a 4-1 victory. The Red Bulls then met FC Dallas in the Round of 16, where Emil Forsberg scored a last-minute free-kick goal to force penalty kicks from the spot, which the Red Bulls ultimately got the best of in order to advance to the Quarterfinal against Philadelphia. Mohammed Sofo leads all NYRB players with 3 goals in Open Cup play.

Red Bulls vs Union Fatigue Since the rescheduled match just over a month ago, the Red Bulls have had to deal with a bit more congestion than the Union, thanks to their involvement in the League Cup. Playing a total of 8 competitive games to Union's five and a friendly, you'd expect Red Bulls' Starting XI to look a bit more tired in Chester on Wednesday night, but they actually haven't played all that much more than Union's starting XI has. "If you were a witness to our training session at times, there is no complacency here, there is no comfort. I don't coach that way, I don't speak that way, and everyone has to bring it every single day. Complacency isn't a word I think need to speak about with this group in particular, we just feel it's business as usual. Having said that, there's no automatics, no guarantees." - Bradley Carnell.

Union's Recent Dominance over NYRB The Union will be looking to extend their streak of 15 straight games unbeaten against the Red Bulls on Wednesday night, as well as securing their spot in the Open Cup Semifinal. With a record of 11W-4D-0L during that span, the Union have outscored their rivals by a total of 25GF to 8GA During their 15-game unbeaten streak, the Union have kept a clean sheet in nine of those matches and conceded just once in 5. The only time the Red Bulls have put more than two past the Union during this stretch of dominance was back on October 20th, 2019, when the Union beat the Red Bulls in come-from-behind fashion in the MLS CUP Playoffs, which is the result that kicked off the 15-game unbeaten streak for the U. "It's a privilege to be at this point of the season and to be in contention, and what got us to these moments were tough mid-week games in the thick of Summer when we had to play USL opponents and then turn around 3 days later and play a makeshift squad against St Louis or Chicago or Atlanta where we have short rest. The team has shown we've been able to competitive on all levels with all different rotations," - Bradley Carnell
