One of the biggest talking points came after several Flyers players attended a Philadelphia Phillies game, one which Michkov was present for. Somehow, parts of the internet immediately tried turning that into evidence of tension between the young star and the organization. In reality, it means absolutely nothing. Players are allowed to have their own schedules, their own lives, and their own ways of spending time during the offseason. Not attending a baseball game with teammates does not suddenly create organizational drama.
Now, could there be criticism directed toward how Michkov was utilized throughout stretches of the season? Absolutely. There were moments where Head Coach Rick Tocchet cut his minutes, moved him around the lineup, kept him off the top power-play unit, and even benched him during games. Fans are always going to debate whether that was the correct approach, especially when it comes to developing a player with elite offensive talent. However, hockey still requires accountability. Just because a player is named Matvei Michkov does not mean he is exempt from mistakes or poor stretches of play.
That also does not mean he is a bad player. Far from it.
During the 2025-26 season, Michkov recorded 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 points in 81 games with the Flyers. While those numbers may not fully match the massive expectations placed on him after his rookie season, they are still strong production totals for a 21-year-old winger adjusting to a new coaching system and the physical demands of a full NHL schedule. At times, Michkov showed flashes of exactly what the Flyers believe he can become - a franchise cornerstone. His creativity with the puck, offensive instincts, and ability to create scoring chances remain elite-level traits.
General manager Danny Briere has consistently made it clear that the organization views Michkov as a major part of the Flyers’ future. The Flyers are still rebuilding and developing a young core, and players like Michkov are central to that process. Rumors suggesting the organization has already soured on him simply do not line up with anything the team has publicly said or shown.
The reality is that every offseason, certain players become targets for nonstop rumors because their names generate attention and engagement online. This summer, Michkov appears to be one of those players. But there is a difference between criticism and creating narratives without evidence. Young stars are going to face ups and downs early in their careers, especially in a demanding market like Philadelphia.
At the end of the day, the Flyers still believe in Matvei Michkov, and there is no factual evidence suggesting otherwise. The noise surrounding him may continue throughout the offseason, but none of it changes the fact that the organization still sees him as one of the most important pieces of its future.
