MLS Matchday 12 was a big one. We saw multiple powerhouse clashes from around the league, more Lionel Messi magic, and Jack McGlynn's dominance.
The San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps dueled on Saturday night in California. The match finished 1-1, and the Quakes remain at the top of the Western Conference, three points ahead of the Caps.
The Philadelphia Union suffered another disappointing loss, this time to the New England Revolution. The Union had a 1-0 lead entering the second half, but lost it late when Carles Gil scored the go-ahead goal for the Revs in the 87th minute.
Jack McGlynn carried the Houston Dynamo to a dominant 4-1 win over LAFC on Sunday Night Soccer. McGlynn scored two perfect goals in the match and is making his case for a spot on the U.S. World Cup roster.
We're in another quick turnaround week with Matchday 13 coming on Wednesday. Here is a recap of some of the best action from Matchday 12.
Inter Miami rolled into BMO Field in Toronto and walked out with a 4-2 win. Miami has struggled at home this year but has been great on the road. Messi packed yet another stadium, which isn't a surprise.
Toronto started strong in this one, matching Miami's aggression and playing strong defense. Before the first half whistle, Rodrigi De Paul put Miami up 1-0 in the 44th minute. De Paul's late first-half goal was the energy Miami needed in the second half.
Luis Suárez doubled the lead in the 56th minute, Sergio Reguilón tripled it in the 73rd, and of course, Messi then scored in the 75th.
Toronto found the back of the net twice in the 82' and 90' courtesy of Emilio Aristizábal, but it was too late for anything special. Toronto was missing a lot of key players in this one, but what can you do about it against Miami?
Saturday night was once again another frustrating loss for Philly. The Union looked great throughout the first half, winning battles, creating chances, and Cavan Sullivan probably had his best half of the whole season. The Union converted on a shot from Milan Iloski that deflected off New England right-back Will Sands to have a 1-0 lead entering halftime.
The second half started hot, with both sides picking up the pace. Luca Langoni equalized in the 61st minute from a setup by Carles Gil. It looked like the match was heading towards a draw until Gil scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute.
Poor passing and a defensive structure that allowed Gil to find enough space in the box led to the winning goal.
If things couldn't get worse for the Union, Frankie Westfield left the game early with an apparent hip injury and did not return to play.
A powerhouse Sunday Night Soccer matchup. LAFC vs. Houston Dynamo. The Jack McGlynn show.
Houston came into BMO Stadium in Los Angeles and took no prisoners. McGlynn started the scoring with an incredible shot in the 25'. Guilhereme Augusto then doubled Houston's lead in the 34th minute. Nathan Ordaz pulled one back for LAFC in the 45+1 minute, but that would be the only goal from LAFC in this one.
Mateusz Bogusz put Houston up by two again in the 51st minute, then McGlynn scored another brilliant goal in the 55th to put the game way out of reach for LAFC. Houston climbed back into eighth with the win.
NYCFC took down the Columbus Crew 3-0, with every goal coming from Hannes Wolf. The winger bagged his first career hat trick to put his club into seventh place.
NYCFC dismantled the Crew with cutbacks, allowing Wolf to score each time. These two teams will face each other again on May 20 in the US Open Cup quarterfinals in Columbus.
Nashville SC finished with its second consecutive draw on Saturday against DC United, 2-2. They drew 0-0 with the Union the previous weekend. They are still at the top of the Eastern Conference, but the lead has dwindled to two points.
DC had a 2-0 lead entering the second half until Warren Madrigal's brace (76', 89') brought everything level. Silvan Hefti was sent off with a red card in the 75' for DC, and Nashville took full advantage being one man up.
