MLS Matchday 2 Preview: Florida Derby on Sunday!

MLS Matchday Two is here! Which teams will rebound after a slow start? Which teams can improve to 2-0-0 in MLS?

Posted

We are back for MLS Matchday two! Matchday one provided plenty of fun to kick off the year, and now it's time for the second week of league play.

The Florida Derby between Inter Miami and Orlando City is one of the main highlights of the weekend.  Big news came out about Orlando earlier this week, with Antoine Griezmann reportedly in talks to sign with the club. Orlando has an open DP spot, and Griezmann is a top option.

Griezmann would be another massive name added to MLS, and he will certainly help an Orlando offense that looked beyond poor against the New York Red Bulls last Saturday.

The Philadelphia Union will host NYCFC in their home opener on Sunday. The Union lost to DC United 1-0 last Saturday,  and NYCFC drew 1-1 with LA Galaxy. The last time these two clubs met was in the 2025 Eastern Conference Semi-Final, when NYCFC knocked out the Union 1-0.

FC Dallas vs. Nashville SC has the chance to be a thriller on Saturday night.  Petar Musa led Dallas to a 3-2 win over Toronto last weekend, and Nashville put a beating on the New England Revolution.

Every match is viewable on Apple TV.  Let's have a weekend!

My top five matches to watch

New York Red Bulls vs. New England Revolution

Michael Bradley's MLS coaching debut was a blast to watch. The Red Bulls' academy players also cooked in the win over Orlando. Bradley worked with them before, so no surprise there. Maybe the Red Bulls make a sneaky playoff push this year.

FC Dallas vs. Nashville SC

Dallas can finish in the top five in the West this year. A lot of that will depend on how many times Petar Musa finds the back of the net, which will be a lot. Nashville is coming off a big win against the Revs and is already a fun team to watch.

 Austin FC vs. DC United

Austin almost came out with a win against Minnesota until Kelvin Yeboah scored a 90th-minute equalizer.  They look like a fun team in the West. DC United picked up a win over the Union, and it also looks like they may defy expectations. Maybe DC won't win the Wooden Spoon this year again!

Philadelphia Union vs. NYCFC

The matches between these two are always fun. The new-look Union will want to get their lick back against NYCFC, who ended their season last year. Both sides have many doubters this year, and many see regressions on both sides. Home opening for the Union, though. The hype will be there in the crowd.

Orlando City vs. Inter Miami

Sunday Night Soccer. Orlando looked really bad against the New York Red Bulls, and Miami looked so-so in their loss to LAFC, despite owning possession.  Maybe the Antoine Griezmann news will have Orlando come out firing.
