Eagles make a pair of TE signings as Goedert speculation heats up

Posted

The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their TE group by making two moves on Tuesday. The team agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran tight end Johnny Mundt, and brought back Grant Calcaterra on a one-year deal.

Mundt will add a proven blocking specialist at the position while also contributing to special teams and arrives via Jacksonville. While his numbers do not pop, they also do not need to. He brings experience and physicality to the line of scrimmage. He has built a career doing the dirty work, and Philadelphia will love how he fits into its new offensive structure.

New Philadelphia Eagles OC Sean Mannion played with Mundt with the Rams in 2017-18, and again in Minnesota as recently as 2023. Their familiarity with similar offensive structures and coaching philosophies adds depth to this signing and gives a defined role.

In an offense expected to rely heavily on tight ends to control the line of scrimmage and create space, Mundt could prove to be a valuable piece to the puzzle. This is not the type of signing that grabs headlines the way Woolen did an hour ago, but it is the exact small-roster move that sustains an offense and continues to add to the Eagles' number-one identity: trench domination!

Only further completing that puzzle is the returning Calcaterra. A sixth-round pick back in 2022, many assumed he would be Dallas Goedert's eventual heir to the throne, and that could still be the case. Since then, he's put up 42 catches for 494 yards and a pair of touchdowns, flashing the receiving ability needed to soar in this offsense. While his run-blocking lacks, perhaps a combo with Mundt would help a potential hole left by Dallas Goedert? Only time will tell, but these moves might just make it a little trickier for Goedert to return, at least as an outright TE1 on a heavier contract, which is what we saw in 2025.

As always, thank you for reading!
