Philadelphia Parks & Recreation has launched its 2026 lifeguard recruitment drive, offering competitive pay, bonuses and free training as the city works to fully staff its public pools ahead of summer.

City pools are among Philadelphia’s most in-demand seasonal amenities, providing safe and accessible spaces for residents during the hottest months.

“Every lifeguard we train represents a more prepared Philadelphia," said Susan Slawson, Parks & Recreation commissioner.

Lifeguards will earn a starting wage of $16.85 per hour, with the potential to make up to $18 per hour. Applicants who submit their materials by April 15 and work at least 200 hours are eligible for a $1,000 end-of-season bonus. Those who apply by May 15 and complete 200 hours can receive a $500 bonus.

Free lifeguard training is open to all, and applicants ages 16–24 can also receive a free Red Cross certification.

Training is provided by the city, and gives youth an opportunity to develop emergency response, leadership, and teamwork skills that are recognized as valuable for careers in healthcare, education, and public safety, city officials added.

“Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is not only fulfilling an immediate need in our communities but is also investing in the future of our young people by creating jobs and career pathways,” said Slawson.

To apply, candidates must select a Parks & Recreation pool, contact the site supervisor, complete a swim skills screening and finish certification and pre-employment requirements with assistance from department staff. More information is available on the department’s website.
