Philadelphia takes pride in its athletes, both those born and bred here and those adopted by the city’s various teams. One of the many ways the city honors its outstanding athletes is with the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. On Thursday, Nov. 6, the 2025 class was officially inducted.

Originating in 2004, the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame has honored some of the greatest athletes who have called the city home, be it their hometown, a stop on their journey, or, as is the case for many who come through Philly, the place that became home during and after their athletic careers.

Many great names have since been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including Brian Dawkins, Allen Iverson, Chase Utley, and Charlie Manuel, among others. This year’s class featured many more unforgettable names who will forever be immortalized alongside the city's best athletes.

The 2025 inductee class included Allen Lewis, Bo Roberson, Christy Morgan, Clyde Simmons, Dick Jerardi, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Eddie Coyle, Gary Williams, Jeffrey Lurie, Lynne Carter, Mary Ellen Clark, Mendy Rudolph, Mike Rozier, Paul Holmgren, Roy Thomas, Virginia Allen, the 1925 Darby Hilldales Negro League championship team and the 1985 Villanova NCAA Men’s Basketball championship team.

The honor was not lost on these individuals, many of whom have already been recognized in their careers, either with Olympic medals, Heisman trophies, championship trophies, or previous inductions into other Halls of Fame.

“It's a great honor,” former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Clyde Simmons told Philly Sports Network. “I mean, this is sports, not just football, so it means that you've done something to be recognized as one of the greats. And I am deeply honored that I've been chosen to represent the city like I am.”

A longtime member of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, Paul Holmgren, who has served as a championship right winger, general manager, and president, expressed his deep gratitude for receiving the honor, saying, “I can't put into words how much it meant when I got the phone call back in April.”

Prior to the ceremony, attendees had the opportunity to meet and greet this year’s inductees, expressing their gratitude for the contributions the inductees have made to the local sports scene. Many of those in attendance were longtime members of the Philadelphia sports media scene, former athletes, and even individuals already inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. However, no matter the person’s background, they were all, in some capacity, fans or supporters of Philadelphia’s athletes.

“It brings up a lot of good memories. I had a lot of good years here, and I enjoyed my time when I was here to hear people still talk to you in favorable ways. It's always a good thing for your ego, and it just reminds you that, ‘You know what, I wasn't that bad.’”

A humble message from an all-time great Eagle, part of an exceptional group of individuals recognized for their enduring contributions to Philadelphia sports. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.
