Phillies injury updates: Latest on Harper, Realmuto, Sosa, Turner

Posted

Prior to yesterday's contest, Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson noted that Edmundo Sosa would likely be activated today. That remained true, as Sosa is in the lineup batting sixth and playing shortstop, moving Bryson Stott back over to second base.

Thomson also provided updates on his other injured stars prior to Wednesday's contest against the Miami Marlins. here's the latest:

Bryce Harper (illness)

The superstar first baseman was surprisingly absent from yesterday's game with an undisclosed illness. Thomson said he's feeling better today, but was not at the ballpark when he spoke to media.

It is unclear whether or not he will be at the ballpark tonight, let alone available off the bench.

J.T. Realmuto (finger)

The Phillies catcher took a foul ball off the hand during Tuesday night's loss to the Marlins. He was taken out of the game, mostly as a precaution, but is out of the lineup for tonight's game.

Thomson confirmed there is better mobility in the finger today, but also said "It’s bruised. There’s still some swelling in there, some pain, but not as bad as yesterday." The manager does not feel an IL stint will be required for Realmuto at this time.

Edmundo Sosa (groin)

Sosa was activated from the 10-day injured list Wedensday, spending just one more day than the minimum on the list. He was placed on the IL on September 16, retroactive to September 13, with a right groin strain. They did not anticipate he would need much more than the minimum when the move was first announced, and he is back in as the starting shortstop tonight.

In a corresponding move, infielder Donovan Walton was designated for assignment to make room on the 28-man roster.

Trea Turner (hamstring)

Turner did complete a live batting practice this afternoon, getting six at-bats. He also ran in the outfield at what Thomson estimated to be 75-to-77 percent. The Phillies manager said he would like to see Turner play in a game before the season concludes, and hopes he gets to 100 percent by then. But the manager also noted they won't push him, or any of the injured stars, if they aren't ready.

Other Phillies notes

Johan Rojas' name has come up at the ballpark lately. Thomson confirmed there will be a "stay-hot" camp at Lehigh Valley and Rojas will be one of the players there. Whether that is for a permanent spot on the postseason roster, or staying in shape close by, just in case of an injury, is still to be seen.

While he struggled offensively this year, Rojas' defense could be a different maker in a close postseason game. Per reports, he has also dealt with a quad issue as recently as last week.

Thomson did not provide any other details on who will be a part of the camp that opens Friday. That announcement will come at a later date. Something to watch for the Phillies as October approaches
