Phillies look to slow down Braves in N.L. East showdown this weekend

After dropping back-to-back series at home, the Phillies have to get on track with the Atlanta Braves heading to town.

Following an off day away from the ballpark, the Philadelphia Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park to open a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. The N.L. East rivals will clash six times over the next nine days: three games in South Philly this weekend and a trio of contests in Atlanta, Georgia, between April 24 and 26.

Despite potential playoff distractions around the City of Brotherly Love this weekend, the pitching matchup between Cristopher Sanchez and Chris Sale should be must-see TV on Saturday night.

Phillies Notes

Philly enters the series looking for consistency in the offense. All too often this season, zeros have been added to the PHI column on the gigantic left field scoreboard in front of South Darient street. The Phillies have scored three runs or fewer in half (nine of the 18) of the ballgames they’ve played this season, leading to a disappointing 2-7 record in those battles.  There have been short offensive outbursts, like Monday night’s 13-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs, but those games have been far too infrequent for a talented cast of hitters in the Phillies clubhouse this season.

The Phillies rotation has held up as ace Zack Wheeler continues to ramp up his activity level in the Phillies minor leagues. Walker will look to build upon a solid ballgame against Arizona last weekend, where he scattered four hits and two runs across five innings to pick up his first win of the 2026 campaign. Sanchez has been dominant at home with a 2-0 record, 1.56 earned run average (ERA), and 25 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. Painter has enjoyed pitching in front of the home crowd as well, with a 1-0 record, a 1.74 ERA, and 15 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.

Braves Notes

Atlanta hitters are enjoying life from the penthouse as the MLB’s highest scoring team during the early season. Atlanta’s 106 runs in 19 games sit ahead of the Houston Astros (105 runs in 19 games) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (105 runs in 18 games) entering their matchup against Philadelphia. The Braves are second in the league with a .276 batting average, second in slugging percentage (.449%), and third in the majors in on-base percentage (.341%). Phillies pitchers are going to have their work cut out for them to keep the Braves' offense grounded this weekend.

Braves pitching has equaled the exceptional performance of its offensive counterpart with the league’s best ERA (2.93), the only club in the majors with a sub-3.00 ERA this season. Atlanta has received eight quality starts, meaning Braves starters have pitched at least six innings and allowed three or fewer runs. The bullpen has done its job with Robert Suarez (three holds) and Raisel Iglesias (four saves) leading the way to Atlanta victories once the Braves have a lead.

Who & What to Watch For

Outfielders Brandon Marsh (.290 batting average) and Justin Crawford (.283) have led the Phillies' offensive charge at the plate, which isn’t the ideal route to success. Philadelphia needs more from its core of infielders: Trea Turner (.260), Bryce Harper (.258), Bryson Stott (.204), and Alec Bohm (.145). If you subscribe to the Wins Above Replacement (WAR) model, each of these athletes has performed at a league-average level to start the 2026  campaign: Turner (0.0), Harper (0.0), Stott (-0.3), and Bohm (-0.4). Look for the Phillies to get a jolt from their infielders this weekend as the quartet is simply too talented to produce replaceable results.

If any nerves remain from the playoff excitement surrounding the city, those survivors will be tested during the battle between the Phillies pitching and an extremely talented Braves offense. Catcher Drake Baldwin has been extremely dangerous with a .321 batting average, five home runs, and 19 RBIs. Matt Olson is a strikeout candidate (25 Ks in 75 at-bats), but he can also swing a game for Atlanta with his power (five home runs and 19 RBIs).
