According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Boston Red Sox have poached Ranger Suárez from free agency waters, offering the Phillies pitcher a five-year deal worth $130 million.
Suarez has developed into a quality arm over the last few seasons with the Phillies. Over the last five years, he's averaged a 3.25 ERA, 1.24 WHIP. He posted a career-low 3.2 ERA in 2025, striking out 151 batters in what was yet another stellar season. The 30-year-old earned a reputation for excelling under the brightest lights and improving his arsenal year-on-year. While velocity has never been his calling card, the list of ways he can sting a lineup has no end. Unfortunately for Philly, with Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler already being paid top dollar, keeping him on their books was always going to be difficult.
He now joins a Red Sox pitching staff including Sonny Gray and Garrett Crochet. Sending Suárez to the mound has brought confidence to Philadelphia, but there's a chance that they will be on the other side of the coin when the stakes are high next season.
The domino effect here is what's really intriguing. After losing Alex Bregman, the Red Sox looked in play for the services of Bo Bichette, who has also been eyed up by the Phils. This move not only loads Philadelphia with capital to go and get their reported guy, but it likely removes the Red Sox from the sweepstakes. However, it's still unlikely that the Phillies will be able to retain JT Realmuto and pay Bichette, so it's far from an easy decision.
This offseason has already had plenty of twists and turns, but there could still be a few more to come — with Bo Bichette being at the center of them.
For now, Phillies fans can look back on Ranger's eclectic stint with the team with pride. Suárez has been with the team since 2018 and improved year on year, coming up clutch time and time again. Christopher Sanchez and Jesus Luzardo still provide the Fightin's with depth, but replacing Suárez won't be easy.
