Phillies host Mets to kickstart MLB's second half

Posted

Citizens Bank Park will receive the baseball world’s full attention as the Philadelphia Phillies clash with the New York Mets to open the second half of the hardball season. With no other games on the schedule on Thursday night, the ballpark in South Philadelphia receives the national spotlight on ESPN as the only game on the slate before baseball roars back to life with 15 games on Friday night’s schedule.

Philadelphia tosses the backend of the rotation against the National League East’s worst team with Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo and Alan Rangel scheduled to start against New York this weekend. The Phillies are well within striking distance of the N.L. East division crown, trailing the Atlanta Braves (55-40) by two games with 65 games left to play in the 2026 season. The Mets enter the series trailing the division pacesetter by 16 games.

Phillies Notes

Philadelphia has done an incredible job of reversing its fortunes early in the season, rebounding from a 9-19 start over the first 28 games. Don Mattingly’s ballclub has won 45 games and lost 24 contests under his leadership. Excellent starting pitching has helped Philly sail to a winning record midway through July. All-Star slugger Kyle Schwarber leads the league in home runs after leading the N.L. with 56 round-trippers during the 2025 campaign. He would be the first Phillies hitter to repeat as the N.L. home run leader since Mike Schmidt three-peated in 1974, 1975, and 1976.

There will be plenty of debate over the next few weeks over how the Phillies should approach the 2026 Trade Deadline on August 3. The upcoming nine-game homestand against the Mets, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Yankees will likely go a long way toward solidifying the direction of the ballclub. Philadelphia will have a pair of road series before the trade deadline following the upcoming residency in South Philadelphia.

Mets Notes

Poor offseason acquisitions and untimely injuries have conspired to sink New York during 2026. Bo Bichette made a last-minute pivot to land in New York, but has struggled to a .255 batting average and 10 home runs in his first season in the Big Apple; meanwhile, Marcus Semien is hitting just above the Mendoza line with a .214 batting average this season. Reliever Devin Williams owns a winning record (3-2), but features an inflated 4.83 ERA in 35 appearances.

The season has been going so well for New York that their mascots (Mr. & Mrs. Met) outnumbered their player representative (Juan Soto) during 2026 MLB All-Star Game festivities over the last few days in Philly. If you’re looking for a bright spot on the Mets roster this season, rookies A.J. Ewing (.276 batting average) and Carson Benge (.263 BA) are the second and third best hitters on the squad, respectively.

New York sports fans bring out the best (and worst) in Philadelphia sports fans any time the city’s sports franchises clash. No doubt, our fiends from Queens will be loud and boisterous over the next few days after watching Philadelphia receive love lost for an incredible 2026 MLB All-Star Weekend. Phillies fans will need to show up and show out to support the red-pinstriped cast of characters to limit the noise from the traveling supporters from New York.
