PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for the series win in the rubber game against the Chicago White Sox on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
Ahead of the game, interim manager Don Mattingly spoke to the media.
The rookie was rocked for six runs on Saturday, surrendering four in the first inning. The right-hander's command was non-existent for most of the outing, although he was able to gut his way through 4 2/3 innings to help save the bullpen that was not in great shape with how frequently Mattingly has had to use the high-leverage arms over the last couple of weeks.
Painter is 1-7 with a 6.21 ERA this season.
Mattingly confirmed that the rookie will make his next scheduled start on Friday at Milwaukee, and he remains confident in the highly-touted rookie.
"We just have to keep working with him. Obviously, it's a competitive environment. You don't get endless chances, you have to perform," Mattingly said.
"We trust the kid. We think he's going to be good. His last couple [of starts] have been a little shaky, but before that, he was throwing the ball good. This is the big leagues. You have to learn to compete and perform here."
Bob Nightengale reported that Mattingly, along with Cardinals' manager Oli Marmol, will join Dave Roberts' coaching staff for the mid-summer classic next month.
Mattingly said he can confirm that Roberts reached out but chose to wait for MLB to make any type of announcement on the subject.
Mattingly was on Bruce Bochy's staff back in 2015 when the All-Star game was in Cincinnati.
"Anytime you are involved in the All-Star game, it's obviously an honor."
The veteran has reworked his approach on the mound, scrapping his four-seam fastball and using his knuckle curve much more. It has paid off for the righty.
In his last three starts, Nola has not allowed a walk across 16 innings of work while striking out 18 batters. He's held opposing teams to a .238 on-base percentage, which has been a large improvement compared to the start of his season, where he seemingly couldn't keep runners off the base paths.
Rafael Marchán will get the start behind home plate and bat eighth, giving J.T. Realmuto the day off after the evening game on Saturday. Marchan has struggled this season, hitting just .094 (6-for-64).
The top three in the lineup in Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper look to bounce back after a poor performance on Saturday. The trio went a combined 1-for-11 with six strikeouts in the loss. The Phillies struck out 15 times and had just five hits in the loss.
With a win, the Phillies would finish the homestand 5-1 before they hit the road and travel to take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday to start a road swing with six games in seven days.
