REPORT: Phillies re-sign Kyle Schwarber to a five-year, $150 million deal

Posted

The Philadelphia Phillies were the continuous favorite to sign Kyle Schwarber in free agency.  Late Tuesday morning, the Phillies re-signed their designated hitter to a reported five-year $150 million contract.

ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the news.

Kyle Schwarber is coming off the best season of his career, in which he finished second in NL MVP voting. The DH slugged 56 home runs, the second most in Phillies' history.

Since signing with the Phillies in 2022, Schwarber has an .853 OPS with 187 home runs.  He is currently 12th in Phillies history, 8 behind Bobby Abreu.  He will break into the top-10 with 17 homers in 2026.  He'll be 33 years old in March.

He's won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Now, he'll continue to have a chance at a second ring with the Phillies.

Schwarber had reported interest from several clubs, including the  Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox,  New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds. The Pirates had reportedly offered Schwarber four years, $120 million.

The deal comes on the 3rd day of MLB's annual Winter Meetings, this year held in Orlando, FL. Schwarber was the first big free agent domino to fall in the 2025 offseason.

The Phillies still have key free agents JT Realmuto and Harrison Bader out on the market. Recent reports have Bader seeking a three-year deal. The Phillies still remain favorites to re-sign Realmuto. He turns 35 years old in March.

Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies will continue to be active in free agency and trade discussions. The team still needs outfield and relief help to bolster the roster.  Their 40-man roster now sits at 33 players with the Rule 5 Draft coming on Wednesday.
