Phillies have small roster shuffle: Chase Shugart recalled, Griff McGarry traded

Phillies continued to make bullpen moves Tuesday, impacting the MLB roster and their depth

PHILADELPHIA - While the Chicago Cubs have been in town, the Philadelphia Phillies have had a few changes to their roster. The first of which came Monday due to an injury to RHP Jonathan Bowlan. The Phillies moved him to the 15-Day injured list with a groin strain. He was throwing harder and yielding quality results in the early going of the season.  In response, the Phillies recalled RHP Seth Johnson from Lehigh Valley (AAA).

Before the start of Monday's contest, the Detroit Tigers claimed RHP Yoniel Curet on waivers. Curet hadn't pitched yet this season, but struggled in Spring Training.

Johnson pitched in Monday night's opener against the Cubs. He threw a scoreless seventh inning but melted down when tasked with the eighth. He gave up four hits and a walk (his second), leading to five runs (three earned).

Since he threw 50 pitches, the Phillies shuffled the roster again on Tuesday. They optioned Johnson back down to Triple-A, using his last remaining minor league option, and recalled RHP Chase Shugart. Shugart was off to a good start in Triple-A, allowing one run in five innings pitched and striking out six.  The Phillies acquired Shugart from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league infielder Francisco Loreto in the offseason.

Lastly, the Phillies announced a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They sent former promising prospect Griff McGarry to LA for international pool money and a player to be named later or cash considerations. After promissing 2022 and 2023 seasons, McGarry had been listed by some as a top-100 prospect in all of baseball.

McGarry is moving on from Philadelphia's organization for the second time since the end of the 2025 season. In December, the Washington nationals selected him as part of the Rule 5 draft after a promising rebound. In late March, however, he was designated for assginment and return to the Phillies who assigned him to Lehigh Valley.

He couldn't find much success above the Double-A level, sans the aforemention bounce-back a season ago. In 2026, he was being used as a reliever in Lehigh Valley and had allowed four runs in four innings pitched. He walked seven in that span.

The Phillies sit at an 8-8 record heading into Tuesday night's game against the Wrigleyville natives.
