Philadelphia is preparing for a historic year as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary—but one of the city’s most powerful celebrations is already creating its own legacy.
Philly Black Pride, one of the largest celebrations of Black LGBTQ+ culture in the country, returns for its 27th anniversary from April 20 to 26, with an expanded, weeklong lineup of events. This year’s theme, “250 Reasons to Celebrate Black LGBTQ+ Changemakers,” honors individuals across the Greater Philadelphia region who are shaping culture, advocacy and community.
“Philly Black Pride is more than a celebration, it's a movement rooted in legacy, resistance, and radical joy,” said Philly Black Pride President Jacen Bowman. “As we step into our 27th year, we are honoring 250 Black LGBTQ+ Changemakers who are shaping our future in real time. This is about visibility, yes, but it’s also about power, ownership, and making sure our stories are told by us, for us.”
From wellness programming and community conversations to nightlife, live performances and networking events, the week invites attendees to show up as their full selves.
The celebration kicks off Monday, April 20 with a flag raising at City Hall, bringing together community members and local leaders. From there, events unfold across the city; the Warwick Rittenhouse Hotel is the official host site.
Signature events include the Chocolate Social mixer (April 22, 5 to 9 p.m.), which emphasizes intentional community-building, and “Queerly Beloved,” (April 23, 9 p.m. to midnight) an open mic night spotlighting Black queer artistry and storytelling. Younger voices will take center stage at the Youth Party, (April 24, 3 to 7 p.m.) a space designed for connection, joy and affirmation for attendees ages 14 to 23.
The week also balances celebration with purpose. The Thrive Black LGBTQ+ Empowerment Summit (April 26, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) will convene activists, influencers and community members for conversations around the issues shaping Black queer lives today.
Other highlights include the Liberty Love & Black Philly Pride Run (April 25, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and a Gaymer Force video game tournament (April 25, 1 to 5 p.m.).
At the heart of it all is the recognition of 250 changemakers, honored during the opening reception and through daily activations. For Bowman, that recognition is both a tribute and a call to action.
“For decades, our community has created a space where there was none, building culture, sustaining one another, and pushing forward in the face of systemic barriers," he said. "This year, we are not only celebrating individuals, but the collective force of Black LGBTQ+ brilliance that continues to transform our city and beyond.”
