Philadelphians gathered outside City Hall on Thursday evening for a vigil honoring Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minnesota mother and U.S. citizen who was fatally shot during an encounter with a U.S. immigration agent.
Video of the shooting, which has circulated widely online, captured the moments leading up to Good’s death and has fueled public outrage and renewed scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement.
Organizers said the vigil was held in solidarity with the Minneapolis community and to honor victims of what they described as aggressive federal enforcement tactics. Speakers also called for the dismantling of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A march through Center City followed the vigil.
Earlier in the day, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner sharply criticized what he called “Nazified” deportation tactics and warned that any ICE agents who commit crimes within Philadelphia would be arrested and prosecuted.
Krasner also encouraged Philadelphians to record ICE agents and other law enforcement to document alleged misconduct. Without the footage in the Minneapolis shooting, the public would be left with a “stack of lies” from the White House, Krasner remarked.
