Philly protesters march in Center City, rally for peace

Posted

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside City Hall on Tuesday evening for an emergency protest, hours after President Donald Trump posted on social media, “A whole civilization will die tonight,” tied to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

Trump's threat was tied to an 8 p.m. deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that is used to transport 20% of the world's oil supply.

As the Philadelphia protest began, reports emerged that the United States and Iran had agreed to a temporary, two-week ceasefire, easing fears of immediate escalation.

Despite the development, protesters marched through Center City, calling for an end to the conflict in Iran and pleading for peace. Protesters held signs, chanted anti-war slogans and sharply criticized Trump’s rhetoric.
