Pine Road bridge in Fox Chase to close through summer 2027

Construction is set to begin Aug. 17, the city says.

A section of Pine Road will soon be closed for at least a year, as crews replace a bridge in Northeast Philadelphia's Fox Chase neighborhood.

Pine Road between Stanwood Street and Solly Avenue will be off-limits for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists beginning Monday, Aug. 17. The city’s Streets Department of Transportation says construction is expected to continue “through Summer 2027," though there has been no word on a definitive reopening date.

The bridge spans the Fox Chase Lorimer Trail, a path that opened two years ago along the former Newtown branch of SEPTA’s Fox Chase Line.

Drivers will be detoured to Rhawn Street, Verree Road and Bloomfield Avenue to get to and from Oxford Avenue, according to StreetsDOT.

People will still be able to access nearby homes and businesses, city officials said. The trail will be open most of the time, though some periodic closures are planned beginning late this winter, the department stated.

Workers will be demolishing and rebuilding the superstructure and making other repairs. The 48-foot-long bridge was erected in 1964.

Another Pine Road bridge, located about a mile away and spanning Pennypack Creek, was shuttered for much of 2024 as a result of a $4.3 million replacement project.
