Police have identified a man they say is responsible for a series of recent, separate shootings that left two men dead and another injured at Hunting Park.
Jahylin Melchur, 21, is wanted in connection with the violence, authorities said Thursday. Investigators pinpointed Melchur a few days after releasing surveillance images showing the gunman on SEPTA’s B (formerly the Broad Street Line), which he used to get to and from the 87-acre green space in North Philadelphia.
Melchur is accused of fatally shooting Sharef Holman, on Friday, June 26, on the 1200 block of W. Hunting Park Avenue. Less than a week earlier, he allegedly killed 45-year-old Martin Higgins, whose body was found by the baseball field near the 900 block of W. Hunting Park Avenue, authorities said.
Holman and Higgins each died of gunshot wounds to the back, Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore told reporters earlier this week.
Detectives believe Melchur also seriously injured a 55-year-old man by shooting him during an attempted robbery May 29 on the 1000 block of W. Lycoming Street.
Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the PPD’s Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or call or text the tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
