Business Spotlight: Recognizing health concerns before they become emergencies

Posted

Many emergency room visits start with symptoms that seem minor at first. Confusion, dehydration, medication side effects, falls and gradual changes in chronic conditions may not appear urgent, but they can quickly become serious for older adults.

As a caregiver, early recognition can help prevent a trip to the ER.

Closely monitor changes in behavior, energy levels, appetite, mobility, breathing or bathroom habits.

For example, infections in older adults don’t always cause a fever and may instead appear as confusion, fatigue or reduced appetite. New medications can sometimes lead to dizziness, balance issues or unusual fatigue.

Dehydration may cause weakness, dry mouth, dizziness or darker urine, while worsening chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or COPD often show up as increased shortness of breath, swelling or changes in blood sugar levels.

Falls also deserve close monitoring, as pain, bruising or mobility issues may develop later on.

When someone doesn’t seem quite like themselves, take a moment to assess the situation:

  • What symptoms am I noticing?
  • When did they begin?
  • Are they improving or getting worse?
  • Is this unusual for this person?

If symptoms are new but not severe, contacting a primary care provider is often the best first step.

One of the most effective ways to reduce emergency room visits is through preventive, relationship-based primary care. A primary care team can identify underlying issues, review medications, monitor chronic conditions and address concerns before they become emergencies.

Regular checkups, preventive screenings and ongoing care help providers recognize changes early and develop personalized plans to keep patients healthier over time. Having a trusted healthcare team can provide support and peace of mind.

Staying alert to early warning signs and seeking care before problems escalate can help older adults stay healthier and avoid unnecessary emergencies.
