Richmond Library reopens after $2.5M renovation

Philadelphia officials and community members gathered last week to celebrate the reopening of the Richmond Library, which has undergone $2.5 million in renovations funded through the city’s Rebuild program and the Free Library of Philadelphia’s capital budget.

The Port Richmond branch, originally opened in 1910, now features a new roof, masonry repairs, an upgraded HVAC system, and interior restorations. Officials said the upgrades preserve the historic building while ensuring the space can continue to serve the neighborhood for years to come.

“This is the fourth library renovation completed through the Rebuild program this year, with two more expected before year’s end — clear progress in our work to strengthen neighborhood libraries across Philadelphia,” Mayor Cherelle Parker said.

“The renovation of Richmond Library is the result of true collaboration with the City, Rebuild, the Free Library of Philadelphia, and the neighbors who cherish this community resource," added Aparna Palantino of the Capital Program Office. “Today marks an exciting new chapter for Port Richmond."

The Richmond Library is one of several early 20th-century Carnegie libraries designed by architect Edward L. Tilton. It has long been a community hub in Port Richmond, one of Philadelphia’s oldest riverfront neighborhoods.

“Libraries are cornerstones of every community, and especially here in Port Richmond,” Councilmember Mark Squilla said. “These critical facilities upgrades ensure neighbors of all ages will have a reliable space to learn and grow for decades to come.”

The renovations also included historically accurate tilework and a $600,000 HVAC investment from the Free Library’s capital budget. Kelly Richards, the Free Library’s president and director, said the updated branch will continue to provide “a place where education, discovery, and community building can flourish for generations to come.”

The Richmond Library is the latest in a series of neighborhood library improvements aimed at strengthening public spaces across Philadelphia.
