A section of the Schuylkill Expressway will be closed in both directions this weekend, state transportation officials said.

The highway, also called I-76, will be shut down between the I-676 and 30th Street interchanges from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Drivers heading east will be required to exit at Arch Street/30th Street and directed to turn left on Chestnut Street and right on Schuylkill Avenue, officials said. They can re-enter the expressway through a ramp at Walnut Street.

On the westbound side, travelers will be detoured to get off at Walnut Street and follow Schuylkill Avenue to the I-76 ramp, PennDOT advised.

Overnight closures, rotating between the eastbound and westbound lanes, have been occurring this week.

The detours are for construction related to the $148.9 million rehabilitation of the bridges carrying Market Street over the Schuylkill River and adjacent railroad tracks. The span, which connects University City and 30th Street Station to Center City, was blocked off to traffic in late August and is scheduled to reopen in October 2027.
