The Sixers continue to make moves in their front office this offseason, as they will reportedly promote Jameer Nelson to the role of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.

In this role, Nelso will reportedly operate as the second-in-line executive in Philadelphia’s front office under new President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who also reported that the team would be signing Vice President of Player Personnel Prosper Karangwa to a multi-year contract extension.

Nelson, a native of Chester, PA, has enjoyed a quick rise within the Sixers organization, coming to the team in 2020 as the assistant general manager of the team’s G League Affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, later becoming the team's general manager in 2022 and the Sixers’ assistant general manager in 2025 before this most recent promotion.

Growing up, Nelson became a fixture in the local basketball scene, including a stellar collegiate career at Saint Joseph's University. He would go on to a successful 14-year NBA career, spending the majority of his time in the league with the Orlando Magic, which included an NBA Finals appearance in 2009.

After the Sixers and Daryl Morey parted ways earlier this year, Nelson was among the reported top candidates in the team’s search for a replacement, which was led by Bob Myers, President of Sports for the Sixers ownership group, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment.

Nelson was notably the only internal candidate in that search, as General Manager Elton Brand elected not to interview for the position, according to Charania, and will instead work with the team on a new role with the franchise and Harris Blitzer. Brand notably has played a key role in the team’s preparation for the 2026 NBA Draft, even attending the recent draft combine in Chicago, overseeing the team’s operations.

The Sixers have managed to reshuffle their front office while adding a notable, rising outside voice in Mike Gansey, and retaining the trio of Nelson, Brand and Karangwa, despite the interest from rival organizations he received earlier this offseason. The team’s focus now turns to improving the roster, beginning with the upcoming draft.
