Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey has earned his first individual honor of the 2026-27 NBA season, winning the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award.
Maxey has enjoyed a dominant start to his seventh NBA season, averaging 28.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. More importantly, he has played a key role in the Sixers' 3-1 start to the LeBron James era.
This marks the fifth time Maxey has earned the award, and he has perhaps never looked more dominant. The multi-time All-Star has long since won over Sixers fans with his offensive game and relentless work ethic. This season, however, it hasn't just been his team-leading 28.8 points per game that have impressed. His defensive intensity has also reached another level, as he currently sits tied for the team lead in steals per game and tied for second in blocks per game.
While Maxey and the Sixers faced plenty of questions this offseason about fit and playing style, the team has quickly responded to those doubts. Maxey may be the leading scorer, but his willingness to play within the system while allowing his fellow stars to go to work has been another impressive display of maturity from the veteran superstar, who seemingly takes another leap as a player every year.
This may be Maxey's first Player of the Week award of the season, but it is unlikely to be his last.
